Team USA seemed to be on course for an easy win after Dries scored again to open the period for a 7-3 lead. The third quarter was just an avalanche of goals as the teams went back and forth. Team USA had an answer as Wenger scored again on a skip shot for a 5-3 lead and then Kelly Rulon (San Diego, CA) drew a five meter penalty which was converted by Erika Figge (Santa Margarita, CA) for a 6-3 USA lead at half. In the second quarter Russia battled back with two straight goals to close wtihin 4-3 at the 3:46 mark in the first half. Russia answered with a power play goal at the 1:52 mark but that was answered by a Lauren Wenger (Long Beach, CA) goal to make it 4-1 with 1:30 remaining in the quarter. This match was all Team USA early as they got off to a great start getting three straight goals to open the game from Annika Dries (Laguna Beach, CA), Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA) and Elsie Windes (Portland, OR) for a 3-0 lead. ![]() This match saw the USA defeat Russia (0-1-2), a team they fell to at both major competitions in 2009, the FINA World League, and FINA World Championships. The terrible defeat had one beneficial result for Rome. It terms of human lives lost, Arausio was among the most lethal battles in world history, and Rome’s worst defeat since Cannae. With a boost in confidence from this easy victory, the barbarians proceeded to advance, pin Maximus’ army against the river, and destroy it also. Caepio’s army was annihilated due to the hasty nature of this piecemeal assault. Caepio, motivated by hatred and envy of Maximus, foolishly launched an attack on the barbarians. The sight of two Roman armies made Boiorix cautious, and he entered into negotiations with Maximus. Caepio pitched his tents closer to the enemy, and his dispositions are shown on the battlefield (Maximus and his army have made camp off map). However, the armies did not camp together. The Roman forces were camped by the Rhone River, near Arausio (modern Orange). ![]() However, bitter differences between the Consul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus and the Proconsul Quintus Servillius Caepio prevented the two Roman armies from cooperating, with devastating results. Two Roman armies were sent to stop this migration with nearly 80,000 legionnaires. At the same time a major migration by the Cimbri, Teutons and Ambrones under the Kings Boiorix and Teutobod was moving south, reportedly with over 200,000 men (a great exaggeration, more likely the fighters numbered about 50,000). I plan to update it to a newer version soon and that update should bring in a bunch of new word senses for many words (or more accurately, lemma).Following the Punic Wars, Rome set out to consolidate the territories it had captured beyond the Alps. Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: the UBY project (mentioned above), and express.js.Ĭurrently, this is based on a version of wiktionary which is a few years old. I simply extracted the Wiktionary entries and threw them into this interface! So it took a little more work than expected, but I'm happy I kept at it after the first couple of blunders. The researchers have parsed the whole of Wiktionary and other sources, and compiled everything into a single unified resource. That's when I stumbled across the UBY project - an amazing project which needs more recognition. ![]() However, after a day's work wrangling it into a database I realised that there were far too many errors (especially with the part-of-speech tagging) for it to be viable for Word Type.įinally, I went back to Wiktionary - which I already knew about, but had been avoiding because it's not properly structured for parsing. This caused me to investigate the 1913 edition of Websters Dictionary - which is now in the public domain. I initially started with WordNet, but then realised that it was missing many types of words/lemma (determiners, pronouns, abbreviations, and many more). The dictionary is based on the amazing Wiktionary project by wikimedia. ![]() And since I already had a lot of the infrastructure in place from the other two sites, I figured it wouldn't be too much more work to get this up and running. I had an idea for a website that simply explains the word types of the words that you search for - just like a dictionary, but focussed on the part of speech of the words. Both of those projects are based around words, but have much grander goals. ![]() This excerpt comes from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus, written in 1818, when she was a teenager. Both Victor and the Creature are ultimately consumed by remorse, that profoundly self-isolating emotion that paradoxically shows in both of them remnants of reflective humanity. This Promethean tale of daring and reckless scientific over-reaching is also one of unbearable alienation from human community, loneliness (like Shelley’s contemporary, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Ancient Mariner whose “soul has been/Alone on a wide sea”) and, above all, remorse. The Creature blames his murderous behaviour on the exclusion brought about by his otherness, and his unacceptable, hideous appearance: “I was benevolent and good”, he cries, but “misery made me a fiend”. The monster feels agonisingly excluded from domestic happiness and Victor excludes himself by drawing away into his work. The novel contains many depictions of happy domesticity, but those scenes make outsiders of both Victor and the monster. Victor Frankenstein had started to narrate his terrifying story. She awoke and started to write a tale that began with the words “It was on a dreary night of November”. It was there that, stimulated by their efforts to entertain themselves with a ghost story-writing contest, she experienced a waking dream in which, as she later wrote, she saw a “pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together” who beholds a “horrid thing” that looks upon him “with yellow, watery, but speculative eyes”. Educated in the advanced scientific and intellectual culture of her day, she eloped with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1816, and spent that overcast, chilly summer with him, Lord Byron and her step-sister on the shore of Lake Geneva. She was the daughter of the radical political philosopher William Godwin and the pioneering feminist philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft who died giving birth to her. ![]() She had already lived an extraordinary life. Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was only eighteen when she wrote the novel that would give her lasting fame. The dreamlike moment of artistic creation she describes echoes Victor’s account of his moment of perverse creation in the extract here. Stage adaptations of the story in the 1820s brought growing fame, and in 1831 Mary Shelley published an expanded version under her own name and with a preface that situates Frankenstein in the Gothic tradition of “thrilling horror” which she had done so much to revolutionise. The first edition was published anonymously in 1818 as Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. ![]() The Frankenstein legend now saturates our culture, so it is illuminating to look back to the moment when this short work of teenage fiction sold 500 copies, and was widely attributed to a male writer. Upgraded technology and a new interior will help it stay competitive. It has a new rival in the Ford Bronco Sport, but also costs less than most iterations of the Ford. The Compass Trailhawk, with its 8.6 inches of ground clearance and Jeep Active Drive Low 4×4 system, remains the rare compact crossover with real off-road ability. The Compass’ new updates should go a long way to making it a more competitive player in a fierce segment, but the crossover’s pokey powertrain still remains. While the pandemic caused much of the slump, the Compass’ flaws were highlighted by newer or updated competitors like the Kia Seltos and Mazda CX-30, and its distinct off-road character is now challenged by the Ford Bronco Sport. But in 2020 sales slid to 107,969 units as both the Compass and its larger sibling, the Cherokee, experienced some of the biggest drops in the mostly resilient compact crossover segment amid the fallout from Covid-19. Sales more than doubled to 171,167 that year, according to Motor Intelligence data. The second-generation Compass was introduced for model year 2018, and its new looks quickly banished memories of its dated predecessor. Jeep has been paying attention, and the refreshed 2022 Compass, unveiled today at the Chicago Auto Show, brings a vastly improved interior, subtle tweaks to its muscular visage and some desirable new tech features. What do they like least? Its plasticky, low-rent cabin and unrefined, tech-absent feel. Jeepīuyers like two things best about the Jeep Compass: when properly equipped it comes with real off-road ability (a rarity among compact crossovers), and its close, yet miniature, resemblance to a Grand Cherokee. Though not a big change, the revision looks like a scaled-down version of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. ![]() The exterior changes to the 2022 Jeep Compass include revised front and rear styling, new wheels and painted lower body sections and fender flares (formerly, they were black plastic).
